How does Colorjive work?
You upload a photo (or grab one from your Facebook or Flickr account). Then, use the painting tools to add color. There are more detailed instructions on our Help page.

Are the colors on Colorjive reliable?
Color matching depends on two factors:
1) whether your monitor is calibrated correctly (to see if it is, visit calibrize.com), and
2) how well Colorjive’s technology works.
The colors on Colorjive have been measured very carefully. However, comparing a paint sample to a color in a photo is like comparing apples and pears. There’s bound to be a measurable difference. Yet, you should have the impression that they are the same. The best way to compare is to hold the sample off to one side, rather than directly on top of the computer image.

Are all paint colors available?
No. But with thousands of colors available in Colorjive, it’s highly unlikely that you won’t be able to find your color. It is impossible for us to keep track of all the fan decks of all the paint brands in all the places in the world. We do try to make all the colors of the major paint brands available. If you don’t see what you want, please let us know and we’ll try to add it.

What if I can’t find my color?
We’ve got thousands of colors, enough to satisfy even the most demanding color “gourmet.” However, not every color can be produced in paint. If you don’t see your color, it may be because of the limitations of paint manufacturing. There are also some paint colors that don’t display properly on computer monitors.

How do I order my colors in a paint store?
Use the color codes. The color code appears when you hover over a color swatch. Write it down and take it to your local paint store to get it mixed. Each code is brand-specific, so pick colors from the brand you want to use (if you have a preference). Most paint mixing machines can produce colors from more than one brand.

Is Colorjive affiliated with a specific brand of paint?
Colorjive is not owned or operated by any paint brand. This means that we’re not tied to one specific brand and can offer you the widest possible range of colors. However, some brands may pay us to offer color tools through Colorjive. These are always added services, which do not limit the availability of other brands.

How much does it cost to use Colorjive?
A basic account is free. Premium users can store up to 10 photos for $15 per year. With a free account, you can upload a single photo, paint three objects in that photo and save three different versions. If you get a premium account, you can save up to 10 photos, paint 5 objects in each one, and save 7 different versions.

What’s the technology behind Colorjive?
The technology is based on the idea that color involves three participants: light, surface and an observer. The quality of the light is mostly ignored and the observer isn’t even taken into consideration. Most color-matching software only takes the surface into account, using an RGB calculation. It ignores the quality of the light, and the way an observer perceives the color. The paint bucket was developed in cooperation with the University of Amsterdam. Some of the technology was originally designed to help robots recognize objects such as windows or walls.

I live outside the US, can I use Colorjive?
Sure you can. However, the current version includes only a US (English) language version and US paint brands. If you’d like to see a Colorjive version for your own country, please let us know. The more “votes” we get for a particular country, the more quickly it will move to the top of the list.

Who developed Colorjive?
Colorjinn and its predecessors developed the patented technology behind Colorjive over the last 15 years. Contributors include: Igor Asselbergs, Jimmy Troost, Sieds Aalberts, Richard Scheltema, Rutger Bückmann, Ostap Demkovych, Max Volos, Christina Skvarok, and Lia Lotz.

I represent a company. Can we use Colorjive technology on our website?

I represent a paint brand. Would you add our color collections to Colorjive?
